WHAT I DO

Stephen King once said, “To write is human, to edit is divine.” Even the hardest working, most celebrated writers herald the importance of a good editor. Writing and editing go hand in hand. Like bread and butter. Kibbles and bits. Cocktails and dreams.

I help writers sharpen their language and elevate the impact of their work. With a sharp eye for detail, grammar, punctuation, and style, I can turn original copy into exceptional pieces, ready for publication, while keeping technical elements intact and maintaining the author’s unique voice and style.

Academic

Academic editing is about more than commas and citations. It's about making the ideas in your manuscript, journal article, thesis, or dissertation stand out without distraction. Tight sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, consistency, and citation formatting allow your readers to focus on the quality of your ready-for-publication writing, not annoying typos and run-on sentences.

Manuscript styling is available in APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian. or your publisher's house style.

Technical

When it comes to technical documents, good editors work for the writer, but advocate for the reader. I write, edit, and format your documents to make them easy to read and understand while keeping the technical elements intact.

Experienced editors will catch factual and grammatical errors in copy before it is published, preventing embarrassment, additional costs, or lost time. Let me help you with your:

  • Product documentation

  • Training guides

  • Textbooks

  • Operations manuals

  • Employee handbooks

  • Business plans

  • White papers

Resumes and CVs

Writing about yourself is harder than you think. How do you remain objective, but make sure your reader gets the nuances of your experience when you're applying for a new job, graduate school, or a fellowship?

To ensure that your resume, curriculum vitae, LinkedIn profile, admissions essay, or application stands out, your writing must be clear, strong, and persuasive. My 20+ years experience working in higher education and career management, along with my certification in resume writing, will position you to crush the competition.

Instructional Design

Instructional design is the art and science of creating powerful and effective learning experiences. Expert editing assures your educational and professional development materials are clear, learner-focused, and impactful.

I partner with independent corporate training departments, school districts, and educational publishers to develop content, write assessments, review curriculum, write and edit online instructional guides, and publish training manuals.

Hello. It's me.

Carla Coury
Principal | Senior Editor

I developed my editing chops in college, first as a copy editor for the university newspaper, and later as an exam and article proofreader in the psychology department. My love of language and editing inspired me to launch three agencies over the next 15 years specializing in copyediting, document design, resume development, and technical writing across many disciplines. I have degrees in instructional design and organizational communication, and certifications in resume writing and human resources. A concurrent career in higher education has kept me grounded in lifelong learning with an affinity for helping students, educators, job seekers, and entrepreneurs express themselves clearly and tell their stories succinctly. Turning technical jargon into plain language is my specialty.
